Shape. Color. Motion.
Sometimes meaning comes from the process of making rather than thinking. Sometimes it is the way colors interact. Or the tension between shapes, or repetition and variation in form and line. Sometimes the meaning is a feeling.
This painting started with the flamingos and then their features found their way into the other figures.

Inspired by eastern Oregon drives
“The Talkin’ Part of the Song” takes its name from any number of country music songs on the only radio stations available on Highway 20 towards Burns, Oregon, where I grew up.
At the Brothers, Oregon, rest area there is (or there was) a Horse Exercise Area sign that is strangely not out of place, so it found its way into this painting too.

Time
“It’s About Time” is about dreams, ideals, fantasies, reality and acceptance. With time, the clothes and technology will always change yet the patterns repeat and remain.
The red background and some of the simplified forms are a nod to Matisse.

This Thing Called Love
Bowling pins are a symbol of success. Bikes are fun. But there’s more going on here than a good time. Bring to it what you will.
This grew out of the motion of the bike wheels, the wobbly nature of the pin and the rush of that woman wearing the blue shoe. The reclining nude is another nod to Matisse.

White Gloves & Cat TV
This is an interpretation of some of my earliest memories of watching my older sisters dress up for formal high school dances.
Those white gloves have made their way into more than one painting and so has the cat.
