Artist’s Statement
I am inspired by interpretations of beauty, vintage fashion, and the power of color relationships. I am equally interested in gesture, juxtaposed flat and volumetric forms, expressive lines, and the process of artistic mark making. My paintings combine these visual elements to explore the essence of a subject or the spirit of a moment I find multi-faceted, visually intriguing, or humorous.
Some paintings reveal themselves slowly and diligently and others find their way in quick and unexpected expression. I’m continually exploring the delicate balance between imposing structure and exposing the vulnerable spontaneity of the painting. The tension enhances the content — whether figurative or abstract —to hopefully create a connection with the viewer.
My paintings come from personal and societal influences, the joy and fear of making art, and the desire to create a spark of shared recognition. From this connection, the viewer completes the picture through the filter of experience, perspective, ideals, memories and relationships.
Mad about Citrus (self-portrait), 24” x18”, Oil on canvas, 2007
I painted this after learning I had become allergic to citrus.
